It must attach to a ring shank or a chain without damaging it, stay legible after months of customers handling the piece, carry a scannable barcode in a space a few millimetres wide, and look like it belongs next to a gold bangle rather than a shipping carton.

Why Jewellery Labels Are Different

Ordinary retail labels are designed to sit flat on a box. Jewellery labels wrap around curved metal, hang from a clasp or thread through a chain link. That changes almost every requirement.

  • The label must not scratch, tarnish or leave residue on precious metal.
  • It is handled constantly, and every handling is a chance for the print to smudge.

A paper label with direct thermal printing meets none of these well. It will smudge within weeks and fade under case lighting.

Common Types of Jewellery Labels and Tags

Dumbbell or Butterfly Tags

The most widely used format. Two printable wings joined by a narrow neck. The neck threads through a ring or around a chain and the wings fold together and stick to each other rather than to the metal. Ideal for rings, pendants and earrings.

Rat-Tail Tags

One printable wing and a long thin tail that wraps around the item before adhering to the back of the wing. Suits bangles, bracelets and thicker pieces where a dumbbell tag would not reach.

Barbell Tags

Similar principle to dumbbell tags with a longer neck, giving more clearance on wider items.

Adhesive Labels

Flat labels applied directly to boxes, pouches and display cards rather than to the jewellery itself. Useful for packaging and stock control where the piece never carries a tag.

Material and Durability

This is where most purchasing decisions go wrong, because the cheaper material looks identical on delivery and only fails later.

  • Paper tags are the least expensive and the least durable. Acceptable for short-term stock or wholesale movement, poor for anything on display.
  • Polypropylene tags resist tearing, moisture and handling. A sound middle option for most retail use.
  • Polyester tags are the most durable, resist chemicals and abrasion, and hold print quality longest. The right choice for high-value pieces and long display periods.

For anything remaining in a display case for months, or for high-value stock, synthetic material is not a luxury. It is the difference between a tag that still reads at stock-take and one that does not.

Adhesive matters as much as the face material. It must bond firmly to itself where the wings meet, yet never transfer residue onto metal or stone. Ask specifically for a jewellery-grade adhesive rather than a general-purpose one.

Printing Method: Thermal Transfer, Not Direct Thermal

Direct thermal printing uses heat-sensitive paper with no ribbon. It is cheaper and perfectly adequate for a dispatch label that lives for two days. On jewellery it is the wrong choice, because the same heat sensitivity that creates the image causes the label to darken and fade under display lighting and warm conditions.

Thermal transfer printing uses a ribbon to fuse the image into the label surface. On synthetic tags with a resin ribbon, the result resists rubbing, moisture and light for years. For jewellery labels this pairing, meaning a synthetic tag with a resin ribbon, is the standard worth holding to.

Print resolution matters more here than in general labelling. Use 300 dpi rather than 203 dpi. Jewellery tags carry small text, fine metal descriptions and compressed barcodes, and 203 dpi struggles to render them cleanly at this size.

Sizing and Fit

Order a sample roll and test on your actual stock before committing to a bulk order. Check that the neck passes comfortably through your smallest ring size, that the wings meet and seal cleanly with no gap, that the tag does not overwhelm a delicate piece visually, and that it hangs without twisting in the display.

Most suppliers hold a handful of standard sizes. If you carry an unusual range, custom sizing is straightforward but carries a minimum order quantity, so confirm that before you plan around it.

Barcode Requirements

Space is the constraint. A full linear barcode may simply not fit legibly on a jewellery tag wing.

  • Code 128 works well where you have the width, and is compact for the data it carries.
  • 2D codes such as DataMatrix hold far more information in a much smaller footprint and are usually the better fit for small tags.
  • Always print a test batch and scan it with the scanner you actually use in store. A code that looks fine to the eye can be unreadable at the counter.

Keep a quiet zone, meaning clear space, around the barcode. Crowding it with text is one of the most common reasons small barcodes fail to scan.

  • Choosing paper tags on price and discovering the print has faded at stock-take.
  • Using direct thermal for anything that sits under display lighting.
  • Printing at 203 dpi and finding the barcode will not scan reliably.
  • Ordering in bulk before testing on your own stock.

  • Filling the whole wing with text and leaving no quiet zone around the barcode.
